Who am I to talk weighted blankets?

My name is Bob Ozment and I’ve been testing and researching sleep products for a living for a decade now. Before that, I was a Quality Assurance Managers with one of the bigger names in the sleep industry.

Our list and ratings are fruit of over 6,200 work hours, and 24 months of testing and statistical analysis of 77 products.

We introduced a new rating category that evaluates the balance between weight, size, and quality. The updates formula gives a slight edge to quality over weight, which balanced out the weight-only approach. This translates to diversity of picks.

This offers a wider range of choices for people of smaller stature and the elderly.

The update also highlights budget-friendly options that don’t compromise on comfort or quality. Plus, safety tips are included to help users choose the right blanket weight for their body type.

We update this guide monthly. In this update, we added 3 potential picks and analyzed them – two of them are in the 50-pound weighted blanket category.Along with the rest of the year thata total of 29. We also looked into a few reports of quality issues with the existing picks.

The goal is always to keep this page fresh and relevant and offer first hand experiences. You know…actually test the blankets and talk to people using them.

In other words, go beyond and tell you how heavy the blankets would feel.

What’s “cooking?”

On the backside, we’re working on some advanced tests, stats and ways to measure weight and impact of the weighted blankets’ size.

We already have the data but the challenge is how to translate it into simple, actionable information. We expect tpo have the new system up and running by the end of the year .

It will bring a host of new information and factors related to mass and volume of weghted blankets. These new factors will fine tune the current system of rating the weight of the blankets and how that translates to quality and soothing properties.

Some of these new factors include size. The final equation will be a fine-tuned and balanced take on analyzed tehe eight and size of the blankets. We’re excited to get it going.

Because that is a crucial job with everything we do – simplification.

Here’s an example – when speaking about warmth, we’d like to move away from TOGs and thermal resistance classes and use everyday language that’s still packing valuable information.

We’re working with some top industry minds to advance the current models of rating how heavy a weighted blanket is…models that go way beyond the numbers listed in the spec sheet.

It’s an uphill battle but we’re on our way. In the meantime, we already have a system that goes beyond weight and.

So, this month’s update brings slights change in ratings. However, the ranking of the top gravity blankets did not “budge” still. We continue to monitor and collect data and update our ratings accordingly.

An important upcoming update to the guide on heaviest weighted blankets

One “series” of products we are currently working on are products from companies like Mosaic.

Mosaic is one of the bigger players in the industry and, based on what we’ve seen so far, shows promise that at least one of their products will find a way to to the top of the list of heaviest and biggest.

We still have a long way to go with this update (at least a month or two), but it does seem that some of the newly rated products will find their way into the Top 5.

Also, we are currently working on improving our rating system to make the stats more sophisticated and sensitive to any change in quality. It’s our hope that that new and improved methodology will improve the precision.

Changes in the way we compare the blankets

Not much really, we’re simply looking into some new arrivals which are yet to meet the minimal requirement in terms of data volume we need (more on that in a second).

For those of you who are familiar with our website or a regular reader, you’ll notice that this month’s update brings only slight changes in ratings and no change in the order of Top 5.

As we mentioned, we did tweaking our reviewing and rating process a bit to adjust to new arrivals. We used to have a stricter “maturity” policy – meaning that we only included products with a certain numbers of experinces shared (typically it was 100). We brought that down a peg to rate the new arrivals faster.

We just took a moment here to explain the important parts of our updates and reviewing policy to help you understand what the bases are for the above ratings.

How heavy should a weighted blanket be?

A weighted blanket should weigh about 10 % of your body weight plus 1-2 lbs.

This is the formula commonly used for kids and teens. For adults, this means that the weight goes as high as 25-40 lbs (Queen or King size designed for heavier people). Our research also shows that the weight adults found to be “just right” largely depends on the sensory condition.

The heaviest weight blankets on our list go up to 50 lbs, which is a bit extreme and only a good fit for select few.

That’s why we focused on choosing products that offer versatility.

Two rules we had in mind when choosing:

1. If you want the biggest, it doesn’t have to be the heaviest.
2. If you want the heaviest weighted blanket, it doesn’t have to be the biggest.

The final choice of the blanket you use should always be a combo of the advice you get from your therapist, and your preference, the information we provide here are for educational purposes and reference.

You can get a good sense of how the blanket will feel in term of weight by simply gathering the blankets you have laying around and pilling them on. If you try this, ignore the feeling of the heat and focus on how the weight feels. The actual product will not be as warm; it should offer the calming effect of the added weight without heating you up too much and, in some cases, even cool you down.

Choosing a cover

If you happen to own a blanket and for some reason you got one without a cover or it worn out and you need a new one, you’ll need the know-how of choosing a new one.

Initially, we though about discussing that here, but as we developed the guide, it became obvious it deserves an analysis of its own. So, you can see our guide on dedicated duvet covers here.

Sizes

Sizes range from smaller (dedicated sizes) to Queen and King weighted blankets.

When we say “Queen” and “King” we’re referring to sizes that are large enough for those bed sizes, not the size chart for blankets. Here’s what we mean by that – a classic Queen size blanket would be 96 x 108 “, none of these are that big – the largest one we found is Ynm King size, which is 80 x 87”.

The size is another important factor because the bigger the blanket, the more of it will be on the surface not directly pressing your body. For example, a 60 x 80″ size will press you more than 80 x 78 ” (of the same weight). It is common sense and pretty straightforward, but we found it to be a commonly overlooked aspect.

What is a weighted blanket?

Weighted blankets are products designed to offer relief to people with anxiety, sleep and sensory response problems. Initially they were designed as the therapeutic but have outgrown the concept and entered the mainstream of sleep aids.

Why do they work?

They work because they calm down the “fight or flight” response, lower the cortisol levels and increase mood and sleep hormones like serotonin and melatonin.

Scientifically speaking

They can soothe the part of our nervous system that we can’t control (Autonomic).

Two parts of the Autonomic system are Sympathetic and Parasympathetic – the former is “responsible” for feeling anxious because its role is to prepare us for physical activity and the latter does the opposite – calms you down and prepares you to sleep or rest.

Through Deep Pressure Stimulation, a good weighted blanket can calm the Sympathetic system down and switch to Parasympathetic responses.

If you’re a Friends fan and remember Chandler’s line, “It’s like a giant hug,” that probably explains it better than any scientific lingo.

In the context of this guide, many of these benefits come down to size and weight of the blanket vs. that of the sleeper.

Do they work for sleep and insomnia?

There is significant evidence in studies that weighted blankets do work for sleep disorders and insomnia.

A study conducted by the Institute of Neuroscience and Physiology of the Gothenburg University and the Clinical and Experimental Medicine Department of the Linkoping University showed that a weighted blanket has a measurable positive impact in people with insomnia.

The concept as we know it today can be traced back to Dr. Temple Grandin and her invention of the “squeeze machine”. She published the findings based on a decade of research in 1992 – you can see the full paper here.

Where can I buy a weighted blanket?

In our research for this guide, we had numerous sources we looked at. It’s our opinion that (for the ones that available on the site) getting a weighted blanket on Amazon has a few advantages. The main one is that you can read the reviews users shared and look for the ones that closely match your circumstances or condition.

For some of the brands (like Brookstone) were not available on Amazon. In the case of Brookstone, you could get one through their website or at Bed Bath and Beyond.

Some brands can be found both on Amazon and at Bed Bath and Beyond. In our research, we were left with the impression that the main benefit of getting one through Amazon is the wider range of the products offered as well as more user reviews shared.

Specific materials

All of the best weighted blankets (including our top 5) come with recommendations on how to wash the product. So, the following analysis is included more for reference purposes than anything else, to help you in the initial process of choosing and if you to make a diy blanket and have dilemmas about the materials.

Fleece

Fleece is a sensitive material, but we feel that there is misconception about washing it. The changes in texture and shape are, more often than not, a result of aggressive detergents or washing cycles.

To prevent fleece losing its “fluffy” quality, you’ll want to wash in using warm (not hot) cycles on your washing machine and go with low-heat drying cycles. It’s a good idea to rinse it twice before drying it. This will remove any remaining detergent that might change the texture in the long run.

Finally, fleece is one of the few materials used that handles softeners well in the long run without loosing shape.

Cotton

If the weighted blanket is all-cotton (both the backing and finish), you have a bit more leeway when washing it.

The important part when washing cotton blanket is what we like to call “load control.” It comes down to not overburdening your washing machine and washing it separately.

The reason is two-fold – it’s gentler to the washing machine and the tear and wear of the blanket are lower.

Flannel

Flannel is sub-type of cotton. Proper maintenance comes down to a few main rules:

• no hot cycles (wash it with warm or cold water)
• don’t over-dry it (as soon as the drying cycle is finished, remove the blanket)
• rinse twice to maintain the softness

Rayon and linen

Some of the best weighted blankets are made using a combo of rayon and linen because it has superb shape retention properties while remaining “on the soft side.” These fabrics include cellulose which doesn’t respond well to bleaching. You might not see it when washing, but in the long run, it will affect the lifespan of the fibers.

A brief history

The products that we mention in this guide and label as best weighted blankets in their respective categories are significantly different from the product that kick-started the industry, both in design, materials used and a range of people they’re intended for.

The origins go back to the sensory disorders. Psychiatrists experimented with weight as means of calming down the sensory response for far too long and pinpointing one person as the inventor is not straightforward.

Initially, the experiments were just about adding weight. The approach proved to have a “red line” because, at higher weights, the response has a negative in fact, it can exacerbate the sensory response and make the person even more anxious because they feel trapped.

The discovery that caused the most significant shift in the industry and led to the designs we know today is the even weight distribution. That’s when people stopped experimenting with (what now seems an obviously counterproductive practice) of attaching actual weights to the edges of blankets.

Initial issues

Even the first modern designs had a similar issue because they relied on a one-chamber filling. This filling would move through the blanket and end up in the corners with prolonged use. The corners and edges would then become too heavy causing the blanket to slide or the used to feel trapped.

The evolution – DIY weighted blankets in the autism community

First attempts of addressing the issue were nothing to write home about because they relied on simply filling the blankets and pads with more of the same filling or adding other stuffing that was supposed to stop the beads from moving. It didn’t work as expected – it only made the blankets bigger and more cumbersome.

Here, we’re still talking about the DIY sensory blankets, hand-made for kids and adults with special needs. There was still no standard for the filling and people used whatever provided a similar effect (from rice and corn to pebbles). None of these were a lasting solution – the seeds can sprout and cause issues ranging from the change in the way the blanket feels to allergic reactions while the pebbles proved to be too rugged and would wear down the materials of the cloth.

Chambered (quilted) design

It was only when chambered designed and tight stitches that hold the beads in place was introduced that things changed. It seems like an obvious change, but it took years to get there.

The sectional designs pair the calming effects of weight with deep sensory pressure. We could get into the nitty-gritty of the science here but, for the purposes of this guide, it’s enough to explain as even weight distribution.

What the future holds

We don’t see any revolutionary changes happening in the designs anytime soon.

We do expect a more diverse market in terms of pellet and bead size. This would allow further personalization of the calming effect.

History and predictions aside, let us get back to where we are today and answer some of the frequently asked questions about weighted blankets.

Modern designs & cooling materials

What we know as a weighted blanket today combined the sectional design (usually quilted squares) with poly-pellets and glass beads. Both are spherical, and the main difference is the density of the materials.

As we mentioned in one of the reviews, poly-pellets make for a more “aerated” feel while the fine glass, sand-like spheres make for thinner blankets. This also means that, with other things equal, the bigger ones will perfom better at dissipating heat.

For example,  15 lbs doesn’t feel the same if distributed over a 60 x 80 and 48 x 72 inches, the former will feel cooler.

Lastly, some of the modern materials have cooling properties (like natural bamboo viscose) so that the added weight doesn’t feel hot – a good example of that is the YnM Cooling – you can see it on Amazon here.

Filling

In case you are the kind of buyer that likes to understand all about the product they’re buying of you want to make a DIY weighted blanket, you might want to know what kind of filling is most commonly used.

Poly pellets

No. 1 filling are poly-pellets. When we say “no.1,” we’re primarily referring to how frequent the filling is used in the best weighted blankets we reviewed.

The poly-pellets are made from non-recycled, toxin-free pieces and look like round bits. The texture resembles that of a small pebble. If this is one of your concerns and you want something that feels more uniform, you’ll probably prefer glass beads of sand filling.

Glass beads

The glass-bead filling sounds different than it is. If you didn’t know it was glass-based, you’d have the impression that it’s sand. In fact, some of the glass beads feel even finer than the finest sand.

Because the weight is distributed more evenly and less likely to move to the corners of the blanket or cover, we’ve seen people reporting that the subjective feeling of glass-bead or sand filling “feels” like it has more weight that one filled with plastic pellets.

Volume of the filling

You’ll probably need about two times as much (in terms of volume) of plastic pellets than glass beads to fill a “pocket” of the same weight.

This means that the plastic filling will feel more “rackety” and uneven and will be thicker, while glass or sand makes for a thinner weighted blanket.

In our experience, we’ve seen that people preferred the “aerated” feel of the poly to sand or glass and most of our top have this type of feeling. The exception is the category of a king size weighted blanket, for a few reasons.

We found the glass filling to be superior in larger sizes.

Besides the most important factor (the user satisfaction) we found that some products have too big of a surface to keep the filling in place. As a result, most of the products in “King size” we looked at had the issue of too much movement inside the quilting.

Gravity blanket review

After the launch through Kickstarter, Gravity blanket became one of the most popular brands.

It’s so popular, in fact, that there’s even a confusion in the terminology and we’ve seen many people confusing the name of the brand with the product (weighted blanket).

• Weight (sizes) available: 25, 20 and 15 lbs
• Technology: Gravity calls it “Deep Touch Pressure Stimulation.”
• Inner material: cotton
• Filling: premium grade, toxin-free
• Outer finish: Micro-fleece, super-soft

At the time of the last update to the Gravity blanket review, there wasn’t enough data for us to rate it. We hope we’ll get there by the next update.

Queen size weighted blanket for adults

ZonLi is the 4th highest rated product overall and out top pick in this size category. It’s 60″ wide, 80″ long and weighs 20 pounds. The pellets are standard (poly) and are packed inside a cotton “chambers” (square quilt stitching). With Queen sized linen being more popular (thank King), the choices you have in the size are similar to our top overall picks.

ZonLi is the 4th highest rated overall and out top pick in this size category. The size closest to Queen is 60″ wide, 80″ long and weighs 20 pounds. The pellets are standard (poly) and are packed inside a cotton “chambers” (square quilt stitching). It comes in 4 colors: Black, Navy Blue, Dark Gray and Brown  – you can skip back to it’s analysis by clicking here.

Product closest in size to a King size weighted blanket with the highest satisfaction ratings (84/100) comes from YnM. It measures 80 x 87 inches and weighs 25 pounds.

The filling is sand pellets while the finish is 100 cotton. It comes in a range of colors and patterns but the “issue” we’ve seen here is that not all of them are available in the largest size.

King weighted blankets are scarce and cost a peg more, which is to be expected, especially of this quality. They’re made for adults, and that’s one of the reasons the YnM in King size is not available in all colors and patterns (because some of the patterns are playful, colorful and obviously intended for kids).

The sand pellets used are certified to be free of any odor and completely non-toxic.

Lap pads

Besides the standard sizes used for sleeping, the product is also available in specialized sizes, like lap pads for adults and kids. We found the former to be scarce and only a few high-quality products in this size category had a satisfaction rating if over 80% in user reviews.

Why it matters

For us, this meant sifting through the data looking for the experiences pertaining solely to the cover.

In the case of this Home Smart, the product is listed as a standalone with most retailers, which means you can be sure that the owner satisfaction you’re seeing reflects the quality of the product.

One-stop-shop

What we mean by one-stop-shop is the fact that most of the covers we’ll look at have a unique texture. It’s either smooth two-sided polyester or padded or regular cotton, stitched velvet and tencel, with or without tactile bumps.

The Home Smart justified the name by offering an option for each of these types, meaning that whatever the kind of cover you’re looking for you are likely to find it among the Home Smart options.

Finally, the warranty policy is as clear as it gets and we have seen none of the “red lights” that can turn us away from a product.

If the warranty terms are unclear (read: there’s room for interpretation) or we see owners complaining about the customer service falling short, it’s a huge minus and possibly a deal-breaker.

We saw none of that with Home Smart. The wording is clear – they offer a 100% money back guarantee and a lifetime warranty. Through the years, we’ve analyzed 1000s of products in the industry, and this is as good as it gets.

If you already own a blanket, the option of getting the Home Smart in two materials (let’s say the bamboo for the summer and the padded velvet for the winter) seems like a get-and-forget option.

Hug Bud – 48 x 72” / Twin

Because of the extra padding, it can be used on its own. It is, however, specifically designed for the Hug Bud, which means that the ties that are supposed to secure it are distributed along the edges with the Hug Bud in mind.

There are 8 of these.

As we go along, you’ll notice a pattern – most of the blankets have the same number of ties and, again, most of them are on the corners and one in the middle of each side.

What this means for you is that if you get the sizing right, which is pretty straightforward, the cover can be easily attached and that’s a big plus.

In this category, we like two products. When we say like, we mean that the numbers are there for us to stand behind these two.

Sizes

We’ve chosen two because of sizing issues. Our first pick, the DensityComfort only comes in two sizes: 48×72 “ and 60×80 ”.

The other comes from YNM and is available in 4 sizes: 36×48”, 41×60”, 48×72”, 60×80” (queen) and even the scarce 80×87”.

Don’te be confused by the terms

We’ve already gone over the fact that terms like queen or king size here are not universally applicable.

Among “regular blankets” and throws, say, king size would mean that it’s 108×90”. When that terminology is used here, it described what bed size the product is meant for.

To put it simply, you’re better of by looking at the precise dimensions than the descriptive terms.

So, let us get back to the two products we mentioned.

We tried to separate the wheat from the chaff here by only looking at the products that would be suitable for hot sleepers, and these two stood out, primarily in terms of how satisfied the owners are.

We dug deeper and found that these two have a lower 5 of customer reporting problems like durability issues, shrinking, not being true to size of being damaged on arrival.

The main difference between the two is that YnM has more of silky quality to it.

The answer to that is yes. However, because of the extra weight, you might find it moving around or the weight shifting, which defeats the purpose. It’s smarter to get one that’s designed for this purpose alone and enjoy all the benefits.

Now, what do we mean by “designed”?

First of all, your regular cover is likely to be bigger than the blanket, and you’ll find yourself in a constant battle with extra material flapping around.

Even if you happen to hit the nail on the head with the size, there will be less movement, but it will move.

The reasons are the ties/snaps

Let’s get straight to the point – the optimal scenario is getting a cover that attaches at all the right places.

That probably sounds more difficult than it is.

The reason is the fact that (again, in most cases) the cover is attached to the inners using ties. In most sizes, there will be 8 of them, one on each corner and one in the middle of each side.

The two rules of thumb would be:

• Make sure that the sizing is correct
• Make sure that the same method of attaching is utilized both in the blanket and the cover

Alternative attachment methods

We are mentioning “method” because there are blankets out there that feature snaps or buttons and are meant to be used with a cover from the same company.

You can poke holes in the removable cover and do some sewing to make it all work, but why would you do that if you’re already spending money.

If you’re anything like us, you’ll like the product that you get to be what we call “get-and-forget.”

If you get the sizing right – the rest is mostly a matter of preference, provided of course that you don’t get a sub-par product.

Most common materials

Tencel, velvet, regular cotton, bamboo…there is a range of materials available and even the sythetic ones are often so soft that you can’t tell the difference. So, if you’re strict about what comes in contact with your skin, pay close attention to the label (of the fact sheet if you’re shopping online).

Our picks are made with most common sizes in mind, which are: 60×80, 48×72 and 54×72 (in inches).

With the less popular sizes like 50×75, 48×78, 80×87, 41×60, 40×60 & 70×50, we tried to do the best we can to offer at least one product. It’s fair to mention that sizing versatility is one big plus for the YnM.

Why shopping online for a cover has its advantages

In a store like, say, Target, you can touch the product and see if you like how it feels against your skin, but there’s no way to know if the ties tend to fall off, how good is the stitching and how well it stands the test of time without changing.

The last one is crucial (at least it proved to be in our analysis), especially size-wise. You’ll want a cover that’s easy to maintain (machine wash and dry) and doesn’t shrink or bleed color.

In the analysis you’ll see below, we aim to answer a few burning questions like, “Is it worth the few extra bucks?”, by looking at all the major quality aspects that define it.

Data gathered

For the past 5 months, we’ve been gathering data to use for our statistical analysis and ratings from as many independent sources as we possibly could. We combined that with the experiences of people we reached out to to ask about the product and, finally, our in-house reviewer Mark, who is a high-altitude high care and trekker.

Our model of rating

Our statistical model of reviewing was developed and tweaked over the years. We wouldn’t go as far as saying that it’s perfect, but we are proud of it since it’s not a mere opinion but a reflection of significant volume of data.

Finally, to keep it all fresh and relevant, we update this review on either bi or four-month basis (depending on the volume of new data).

Without much ado, let’s get to the analysis.

Therein lies the beauty of the Matador

The 2.0 folds down to about the size of an average smart phone and concoct really fit pretty much any pocket.

We are stressing that because it’s an important aspect of its value – with this type of products, the manufacturers usually brag about how little space it occupies in your backpack.

When unfolded it measures a hefty 63 inches in length and 44 inches in width, but packed down it measures 4 x 3 inches. It’s also only 1.2 inches thick and weighs under 4 ounces (3.84 to be exact).

The unfolded size is enough to sit four people or lay two. Having in mind the above listed measurements, we’d say that it’s pretty impressive.

Here are some aspects that the inventor of the Matador, Christopher Aaron Clearman, listed as specific to the product in the patent:

• Flexible and light materials that fold extremely small and yet, are completely waterproof
• The folding, lines and marking materials – the legal lingo used in patents would be of much use to anybody reading this, but it’s fair to say that the patent explains in detail what’s different about the design that allows it to be packed and folded so small
• Storage pouch with a carrying handle and a cover flap directly attached to the material of the blanket
• Storage tray that includes molded plastic and a perimeter and floor wall

All these aspects combined are what allows the blankets to fold so small and yet to be so versatile in its use. The statistical analysis combined with subjective impressions brings us to the ratings of 94 and 90 in packability and versatility respectively.

What this means for you?

That the ratings above go hand-in-hand to offer increased value.

In other words, when looking at blankets of this type, you’ll want a product that’s sturdy and element-resistant enough to offer solid protection and yet, light enough to be used for other purposes, like a tabletop or an improptu shelter.

There are products out there that do a better job than the Matador in either the first or the second aspect, which is beside the point. The point is the balance between the two, which is where this blanket truly shines.

It’s made of Hyperlyte nylon, which is extremely durable and resistant to punctures and scratches. This means that not only will Matador last long, but you won’t see it changing much with prolonged use.

That goes both for lighter use on grass and sand and the more demanding circumstances a hiker or a tracker might find themselves in (dirt, stones, branches…).

In our opinion, it deserves a solid 90/100 in the durability category.

What this means for the potential owner?

Looking at how well the Matador pocket blanket fares against even the harshest trail circumstances and combining that with the fact that it’s completely waterproof, it’s fair to say that the value provided is, in our opinion, worst the few extra dollars.

However, it’s crucial to know what you need and what you’re getting and there’s one common point of confusion – the difference between the Mini and the 2.0 blanket – we’ll address it bellow.

One common question, “Are the Mini blanket and the 2.0 the same product?”

No, they’re not.

The 2.0 indicates that the product is the successor of the original, with a few minor improvements that do make a difference nonetheless.

The Matador Mini blanket is a version of the product that’s even smaller (both in general and packing size). The Mini weighs only 38 grams and unfolds into a 44 x 28 inch surface (vs the 63 x 44 of the 2.0). It’s meant to lay one person and sit two.

We already mentioned that the classic or regular, however you want to call it, is meant to lay 2 people or sit four.

So, bottom line, the 2.0 is about double the size of the Mini.

Is it pet-friendly?

One comment that we kept seeing is the praise from pet owners were concerned about what the claws might do to the material. In the vast majority of cases, we saw nothing but praise about how well it fares in this aspect.

So, yes, if you like to take your dogs along for picnics or hikes, this blanket will absolutely serve the purpose.

Sturdiness vs. skin-feel

The design of the proprietary fabric specifically aims at delivering a product that can withstand the challenges and yet feel smooth against your skin.

This impressive combination is achieved by combining completely different surfaces for the two sides to the blanket. One side is a coated with polyurethane and has a ripstop quality to it. To put it differently, you might say that it’s made to mimic the toughness of a canvas at a much lower weight and thickness.

On the other hand, the second side feels smooth and gentle against the skin, which is a huge plus whether you’re laying on it, wearing it as an additional protective layer or getting creative by, say, improvising a tabletop on the trail.

Typically, similar products have a “plasticky” filling to them and the surface is often on even and crinkles underneath you. The two-sided design applied here eliminates the issue – again, a nice big plus for this baby.

Customer service

We have seen nothing but good experiences with the customer service of the company. For the purposes of this review, we and sent them an email with a few questions about the product. We received a prompt response with clear answers to all our questions.

The evidence that we have indicates a very low percentage of on arrival issues with the product. However, when it does happen, it seems that their customer service is efficient about the issues.

We’ve seen the experiences of people who had some kind of a problem with the product they received and praised the company for the way the situations was handled. To put it simply, those who had a complaint or got a flawed product were promptly sent a new one.

We feel that this blanket reigns supreme in its niche. We already said that, naturally, there are more conventional blankets that would probably be more comfortable, but none of them close to the portability and ease of use.

We also did find a couple of products that pack just as small and (in most cases) cost less, but can’t really compete with the Matador in the majority of the most important quality categories, from water-resistance to durability.

The Matador 2.0 has surpassed what was already a well-rounded product, its predecessor.

The overall rating of 91/100 reflects that.

They just choose pricy products and run with it.

This page might be a peg longer read but imagine yourself under a cozy, soft throw a few winters from now.

If you’re anything like me, I’m guessing no.

So, let’s get right into the juicy stuff…whether you’re looking for a gift or a cozy, softest warmest blanket to pamper yourself with this winter, some of our picks will definitely fit the bill.

The first update of 2025 and last of the winter season

This is the busiest time of the year for this guide – there’s new arrivals to test and a pile of new data to process.

Come winter, we crank the updates up because the market is busier. There are new warm blankets to test.

While we continue to do that, we’ve shifted our focus to efficiency and improving the testing and rating the warmth factors.

We spent most of last week gathering data to improve the rating for throw blankets since the warmth and temperature retention quotas are not the same.

That means the tests and rating systems shouldn’t be either, we’ve recognized that and continue to work on improving it.

Upcoming updates and blanket tests

As we’re approaching winter, we’re working hard to prepare for the most imortant update of the year.

In the two upcoming months, we’ll test and rate (at least) 12 blankets in all the warmth-related categories.

More importantly, these are all pre-selected based on teh conversatiosn we’ve had with the owners.

Bottom line – the next update is probably gonna bring some changes as we add new arrivals.

New testers in different winters and new experts

Specifically, we’re talking to our testers from different climates and adjusting the tests to pinpoint the blankets that a are good for “different winters” – from Jane in the extreme cold of Alaska and parts of Canada, through the cold but less harsh winters North Dakota, Minnesota, Wyoming and Montana, to the milder winters in states with mean yearly temperatures in the 45-60 (F) range.

We’re currently looking for testers in Maine , Idaho and Wisconsin – drop us a line if you feel like you might be a good fit. You get a cozy blanket to test and we get to bore you with a bunch of boring questions about your winters and warmth. Fun times, right?

We also diversified the expert opinions and talked to a few international experts, like Mr. Gaiz Salvaro, a Spanish expert in material sciences out of ICMAB-CSIC and George Elkin, a physicist and an expert in heat retention.

What changed in the October 2025 update

Most of these (12 out of 13) are for home use, but the latest update includes one recommendation for the outdoors (5th on the list). It’s the first update of 2025, but we have some new data and arrivals that we had to include.

The ratings you’ll see are fruit of over 3,400+ work hours & 111 products analyzed.

It’s all based on data from 8 separate sources.

That’s two more blankets compared to the previous update. And we’re currently looking to expand this guide into comforters because we get at least a dozen of e-mails a month with questions about it.

We also tweaked a few things in terms of how we approach the warmth ratings of a blanket. We put more emphasis on weight vs temperature isiolation, so you might see some lighter peiece popping up.

The bottom line is this – this update is richer in data, test results and personal experiences than anything that exist out there. 

Finally, we update the ratings monthly to keep the information fresh and relevant at all times.

New companies and manufacturers

We also added some new cozy blankets from companies that are new to the market. None of them made the cut for this update because we don’t have enough testing data, but we expect at least one to be a part of the upcoming update (based on current testing results).

Bottom line – we’ve seen some serious changes in this update, so pour yourself a hot cup of coffee and take your time. Ten minutes here can both save you time and money and keep you cozy – it might sound strange but we’re already testing stuff for the winter of 2023/24.

We’ll go through it all – from types of winter blankets to choose from, through the quality analysis to the ever-so-important satisfaction of the users.

We’ve including  the TOG rating in our testing

We were looking for a way to use the TOG rating (Thermal Overall Grade) in our testing since it’s an internationally recognized scale.

It’s not universally applicable to blankets, for two reason:

1. It was developed for quilts and their warmth retention ability.
2. It’s define din laboratory conditions. While we can mimic those fairly close in our testing, that doesn’t directly translate to how much heat a blanket will retain in your home.
3. There’s always a margin of error.

That’s why we’re adding to our equation and testing for a new factor we call – SSTG – short for Sleep Studies Thermal Grade.

OK, at this point I feel like I’m just blaberring on – let’s be more specific about the stuff that adds  value to you, the reader.

We looked into some new blanket types – like fleece and some for extreme cold

The database of blankets tested for warmth properties has grown significantly since this guide was published. We want from around 50 to over 120 – some of them are whole new types with unique sets of data.

Typically, we add these in response to the questions we see in our inbox…and we got a lot of those…with the approaching winter and all.

To be specific – we analyzed and tested the quality and warmth of 12 new warm winter blankets.

New experts for the winter of  ’24/25

We onboarded new members to the consult team this year. This means new eyeballs on our methodology and it means more testing.

Ultimately, for you, it means better data and methods, more accurate results and, well…warmer blankets for the ’24/25 winter.

As we mentioned, we’re getting even more data and talking to more experts and blanket owners in preparation for the chilly season.

We tested new warm blankets

If you are our regular reader, you’ll notice that this update did not bring any significant changes in the ratings of “the classics.”

What did change, however, is the scope of the blanket types we looked at. This change is a direct result of the feedback of our readers. As time goes by, we learn more about the different definitions of “warmth” and how it balances with other quality aspects. In other words, we continue to work on improving this guide to be more accurate on what most people define as “warm” and continue to expand into new types of products to make it more complete.

In other words, we do our best to have it all in mind and improve the guide to cover more ground, needs or price-wise. With that said, let’s get to the detailed analysis of each product.

This especially goes for the frequency of updates – we started out by updating the information on twice-a-year basis but soon we realized that we need to increase the frequency for the data to stay relevant. Fast forward to 2024 and we are doing updates on monthly basis throughhout the year…sometimes even more frequent.

Come winter, we bump that up to monthly updates because there’s a lot going on – from new arivals to quality changes.

For this update, we’ve focused on testing new types of blankets, including heated and weighted options, which have become more popular this season.

These blankets are now part of our comprehensive warmth tests, so you can expect more variety in our reviews. We’ve also fine-tuned our testing protocols, specifically for performance in different indoor settings, such as varying room temperatures and humidity levels. Additionally, we’ve added new testers from areas with milder climates, such as parts of California and the Southeast, to see how blankets hold up in less extreme winter conditions.

As we said, we simplify the results by boiling down the ratings to a few simple numbers but, on our side of things, getting to that number is anything but simple.

With objective ratings, we go into the nitty-gritty like craftsmanship, both general and imperfections on arrival and developed with prolonged use. This includes things like loose stitches, changes in shape, pilling (when applicable).

On the subjective side, we analyze how satisfied the users are with specific aspects. For this guide, we adjusted our statistical model to put more emphasis on aspects that are more important for winter blankets.

Long story short, in most of the categories above, Poyet Motte was either dominant or in the top 3 in each update.

What it all means for you

Most of us had that conversation about how products are made these days.

There are two sides typically involved in this kind of conversation. You are either on the more experienced side talking about “the good old days” or on the other side that shrugs it off and saying that “it’s just the way things are today.”

Initially, this adjustment in rating methodology wasn’t a part for statistical analysis and we only included it based on the feedback from our featured testers and readers.

The reason is that it’s not only about the warmth. The soothing effect of thicker blanket is now a part of the rating process. Granted, it is a secondary factor, but it is there as means to adjust the ratings to what people are looking for in a good winter blanket.

If it wasn’t there, there would be a number of blankets with an independent heat source that could be practically rated the same. We’re including this explanation to make the ratings clearer.

What matters most…

We mentioned that these blankets have seen some significant improvements. Two that stand out are the auto shutoff function and preheating.

Initially, the products that included both were more expensive, but things leveled down with time and this Sunbeam is the perfect example. It comes with both features and yet, it’s in the same price range as blankets that include only one (and in some cases none) of the two.

It’s also worth noting that the blanket is covered by a 5-year warranty. Finally, it’s one of the few blankets that fall into the “Premium Soft” category, which is the highest in their categorization.

The type of machines used to make good microfiber are not cheap (especially if it’s split microfiber), so there are many companies out there that compromise in the manufacturing process.

With that said, comparison of fiber-to-fiber can come as a shock – Cashmere is 7 to 8 times warmer than wool. The catch is that it is scarce and expensive, so it’s not used for thick blankets – when it isused used in bedding, it’s typically light throws like this.

It’s not simple to choose the material and describe it as “warmest” because some image the materials we mentioned are not used in the same way as others.

A good example of that is Cashmere. We already mentioned that, if you compared it to wool (same fiber thickness), it can be up to 800% warmer.

Why that’s not the full story

In our testing and analysis (based in the owners we talked to and publicly available experiences), we would say that the title of “the warmest blanket for winter” typically goes to products with most well-balanced temperature isolation, weight/hug & mosisture wicking properties.

In case you missed it, “hug” is a quality that we introduced to our testing and rating. To put it simply, it describes how well a blanket contours around your body.

Best blanket for winter – the decision process – from so-so to very warm

It’s easy to get lost in all the lingo when choosing the warmest blanket for winter. So let us take a step back and craft a system of sorts that outlines the steps a smart buyer will make.

Think about the size

Most people skip this step because it seems pretty straightforward. Nonetheless, when we analyzed the complaints of people who weren’t satisfied and had complaints, almost 7% of those were regarding the size.

In some cases, this is a result of companies using the descriptive sizing. In case you have your eye on a product that doesn’t release specific dimensions, let’s clarify what it typically means.

For example, a King size winter blanket would be 108×90 inches, while Double/full/Queen size will be 90 x 90 “. In some cases, the product listings might deviate from these standards. It’s rarely happens in the bigger sizes like King and when it does, it’s almost never smaller. What you might see is a king-size measuring 108 times x 108 “.

A good rule of thumb here is to go with a bed blanket that’s big enough to cover the top of your mattress and has a few extra inches on the sides.

Best for cold weather in homes with decent heating – a good Queen-size winter blanket (based on a poll with 155 participants)

We conducted a poll with 155 people and asked about size of the blankets and the heating in their homes.

Here’s a simplified conclusion from that poll:

A warm queen size blanket with a TOG of 10-12.5 will be the best for most cold-weather conditions. That’s what 71% of them chose.

Warmest materials for winter blankets – side-by-side comparison

We don’t have a lot of ground to cover here because we mentioned the material aspect of the choice in pretty much every section of this guide.

So, let’s reiterate:

Wool – we already labeled wool as top-tier material (with a few caveats about ply and yarn). It would be an oversimplification to label it as “top choice” because there are other factors at play (like the price and versatility). What we mean when we say versatility is whether you can use it in other seasons besides winter.

When it comes to price, it’s somewhat more expensive than fleece or microfiber. On the other hand, that ties into “seasonal value.” A thick warm fleece blanket that would be a good choice for winter will probably be too hot for other seasons.

That’s not the case with wool – it has a unique property to keep you comfortable on cold nights and isolate you from the heat come spring or autumn.

Fleece/microfiber – combination of microfiber and other synthetics that feel natural and plush are one of the most popular choices. Based on the conversations and, in some cases, full interviews with the owners, the appearance plays a big role here.

About 80% of the people we talked to sound the cozy, luxurious look of minky micro fabrics or fuzzy combinations to be visually more appealing.

We also mentioned that not all blankets of this type are created equal and that most of those that are on the cheaper side tend to be sub-par in retention, both in terms of weight and tactile qualities (the softness).

Knitted /crochet acrylic – not the most popular choice, but a viable one, especially for people allergic to wool.

How comfortable are you with added weight?

This should be an important step when choosing the best blanket for winter. We already said a few times that the better heat-retention properties don’t necessarily mean superior. The type is an essential part of that equation.

Fabric strength – go for durable but extra warm

Strength of the fabric is the quality category for doesn’t make much sense on its own unless you’re planning a window escape.

In our ratings, strength is incorporated as a secondary factor into the shape retention and longevity ratings, because it does it play a part.

Fiber to fiber comparison between synthetics and wool will have an obvious winner every time – this synthetics fiber. So that’s not a discussion to be had.

If you’re looking for a warm outdoor blanket, things get a bit trickier because you have to factor in the elements. For dry and cold weather, down is superior, but for humid conditions, you’re better of with down alternative.

Winter blanket vs. all-season

Another thing to keep in mind is how you plan to use the blanket – is it a winter-dedicated or multi-season.

Materials like wool are both warm and breathable. This type allows for multi-season use while others are primarily made to be warm and are likely to be stored come spring.

On the other hand, you have the lightweight options that do offer warmth but are not very likely to be enough on their own for harsh winters.

The materials used to make the Rumpl are premium – pretty much the same as those used in high-quality puffy down jackets and sleeping bags. The finish is high-end nylon (ripstop, 20D). The between the feeling and the finish is designed to balance between insulation and breathability.

The insulation layer is made from materials that allow it to my mimic the insulation properties of down and moisture-repellence of synthetics.

Slipping and shifting

As we mentioned, the finish of the shell is ripstop, but it’s still synthetics – meaning that you’re likely to see some slipping, especially if you pair it with another synthetic surface.

That goes for all blankets of this type. We’re stressing the words “of this type” because it’c crucial to know what you’re looking for. There are products that pack much smaller (like the Matador pocket blanket) but those are primarily aimed at protection from the elements and can’t compete in comfort.

High-performance with a price tag to match

The Rumpl is not a cheap blanket and deciding whether it’s right for you comes down to how you’ll be using it.

There are cheaper blankets that can do the trick if you’re camping trip is a one-off, but seasoned campers will appreciate everything that goes into designing a high-performance & versatile product like the Rumpl.

If you camp/hike frequently, you shouldn’t look at the Rumpl is just another blanket, but an investment. After all, there is a reason they call it “the Cadillac of outdoor blankets.”

One of the most important aspects of the practicality is how easy the Rumpl is to maintain.

Hot vs. Cold weather

The Original Rumpl puffy blanket (the one we are reviewing here) is designed to meet various needs in terms of temperature, but it’s primaly meant to warm up the sleeper.

If you are looking for an all-season product, you might find the Rumpl to be too hot. For reference, the upper limit of temperature range where sleepers found it to be breathable enough still is 45 to 55 F.

Anything higher than that will probably be too hot.

The combination of the insulation fibers & the DWR-coated nylon reflects heat back towards the sleeper, which is great if you’re trying to warm up, but not the best scenario for hot summer nights.

The one downside of packing size

As you unpack the Rumpl, you’ll notice how fast it expands – that’s the fibers letting air into the blanket. It’s that air that gives it the soft, puffy texture and, combined with the coated shell, unparalleled insulation.

The drawstring carry sack is a perfect fit for it when packed down.

If there’s one the downside here it would be the effort it takes to “stuff” it back into the sack.

Over-sizing as a plus

Rumpl obviously accounted for slippage and movement when planning the sizes.

Each of the size options has enough “leftover” surface so you don’t have to worry about tossing/turning and “losing” the blanket in the process. This part is also important if you’re tucking it in.

They recently changed the way they describe the sizes (from Twin & Queen to 1 and 2-person), but that didn’t change much – the generous over-sizing is still there.

3 main advantage over natural down

The type of down-alternative used for the Original Rumpl is bulkier and heavier than natural down.

Even Rumpl started making blankets filled with natural down , but the Original Puffy remains our favorite.

Three main PROs of synthetic down fibers are:

1. Cost
2. Ease of maintenance
3. Most importantly, the ability to face humid conditions while maintaining its properties (without clumping, absorbing moisture and loosing some of its heat retention ability).

Other versions of the Rumpl

As we previously mentioned, this review refers to the original Rumpl puffy blanket (which is our favorite, because we feel it’s top value for most people).

The company also makes the Rumpl down puffy blanket and is in the process of starting a production of a heated version.

The difference between the original Rumpl and the down puffy is that the later is filled with natural goose down.

On the other hand, the difference between the Original and the Rumpl heated is more substantial. The heated version relies on batteries to provide warmth (supplied by 12-V batteries).

The project is still underway on Kickstarter. This version is not only about the extra warmth, but it will also give you the option to use it as a charger for mobile devices and a flashlight.

What is it made of?

Vellux is made of polyurethane.

In the manufacturing process, two layers of polyurethane are reinforced with webbing layer or scrim bonded between them. After that, an adhesive is added, which gives the base color of the blanket & nylon fibers, that are passed trough the electrostatic field, are added to the adhesive.

The electrostatic field binds the fibers. This is the reason why these blankets are so soft and feel natural in spite of the fact that they are synthetic.

Featuring a 1 inch two needle self hem way of sewing, these blankets do not come in bound or stitched alternatives.

The best thing about these blankets is their durability. They can be machined washed many times, and there will be no shrinking, pilling or any other problem, that we often have with blankets made from other fabrics.

To put it simply – it’s a budget solution that, if chosen right will give you all the benefits and “feel” of much more epensive materials.

Recently, we’ve been receiving some questions about the sizing, especially about the Queen and King size. The questions are about the blankets being true to size and if they are too large whether they’d need to be helmed if cut. The answer to that would be that the vast majority is true to size and if you do make any changes, yes, you’d need to trim and helm the edges. Otherwise, the fibers won’t hold, and they’ll to drop off.

It is a common sense thing, but we received the question one too many times to ignore it.

We’d definitely say “no”.

Is there a possibility for the blanket to be “destroyed” in the washing machine?

They are made to be machine washed. Although, there is a possibility that something might happen to it, but that has more to do with a washing machine. If you have a machine that tends to make some problems, try using a laundry bag. Just put a blanket in it and wash it that way.

The first one is for those who not only want to know how to clean their wool, but want to understand why it’s handled the way it is. We wouldn’t reccomend skipping it because, for long-term care, it’s critical to understand the fabric.

The second outlines precise steps on how to do it – from machine and washing to drying and stain-removal.

Beyond the steps – understanding wool

Why does wool shrink in blankets and garment and not on live animals?

The important part – wool products shrink because of the fiber construction

The outer layer of the fiber is covered in scales (cuticle cells). When these scales are messed with (either mechanically, thermally or chemically), they interlock. This is what prevents the fiber from returning to its original shape and size.

In case you didn’t watch the full video, let’s reiterate why wool doesn’t shrink on sheep.

3 reasons:

1. Because it never rains warm water
2. Because it never rains detergent
3. Because nobody rubs or tumbles the sheep when when it rains

Why is that important for washing

We’re not trying to be funny here. The answer to the question above is crucial in understanding how to wash wool without shrinking it.

Goold old ways

Many of us remember at least one sweater that came out of the washing machine and was half as big. As it usually goes, it was our favorite (at least in my case).

I remember my pink Burlington with gray rhomboids that was the talk of the class in high school. That is until my mom hand-washed it a few times and then got tired of it and tossed it into a machine on a “gentle” cycle.

It came out looking like a toy. Literally. It was barely a fit for my little sister.

So, what went wrong?

Two things – the machine cycle & the detergent – plain and simple. The definition of “gentle” changed a lot in the machine-washing industry. I guess the CEOs and engineers had their own “Burlingtons” and learned from it. Today, a gentle cycle in better machines is very close to hand-washing, both in terms of the motion, speed and most importantly, temperature. Today, gentle typically means cold.

Why is is this important?

Understanding why wool shrinks is critical in choosing a machine-cycle and a detergent. We said that shrinkage happens when the scales change and interlock. We also said it happens when you interfere with their fine properties.

So, for minimal shrinkage of your blankets, you would have to plan the washing so that you interfere with the fiber minimally.

Can you wash a wool blanket?

Yes, you can wash a wool blanket but there are exceptions for machine-washing. These depend on the type of fiber, the felting process and type of wool (even sheep breed).

That would be the most accurate answer.

As we said above, if you couldn’t wash it, sheep & alpacas would shrink in the rain. And if you didn’t watch the video or read the explanation and you’re still wondering – no, they don’t shrink.

The good and the bad news for blanket owners

If you are reading this searching for answers about washing a wool blanket, we have good and bad news.

The good news is that the very process that’s problematic when washing wool (interlocking of the scales, also known as felting) is used to make the dense weave of a blanket in the first place.

It means that the fibers are already treated to interlock which makes them less susceptible to further shrinkage compared to, say, sweaters and socks.

The bad news is that you still have to follow the instruction on the label. We do live in day and age where many companies make labels willy-nilly and just slap a label listing that a product cannot be machine washed to protect themselves from refund requests.

Rules of thumb for machine washing

4 rules

• No machines with a central agitator – machine with an agitator are too aggressive (mechanically) for wool. Even the gentlest cycles will affect the fibers. If you own one, you’ll want to use a laundromat.
• Cold water only – make sure that your chosen cycle runs on cold water. Even lukewarm might be too much, depending on the type of wool.
• Dedicated detergents only – wool is not cheap and there is no excuse in being lazy enough and using what you happen to have on hand. It’s the most common mistake.
• Wash one blanket at a time

By following the three rules above you’re covering all the shrinkage factors – the mechanical, thermal & chemical. The list can also be used as a guideline on how to wash merino wool, wool socks and sweaters.

How to dry wool

After washing, roll the garment in a towel and gently squeeze. If it’s the scarf, or some other smaller piece, you can gently twist it.

The wool garments should be dried on a flat surface, away from the direct sunlight or heat. The sun can damage the color of the fabric, especially when the wet piece is exposed to it. You can put a clean towel beneath your garment so it can absorb the water in the process.

Stay away from the dryers, if it’s not said otherwise on the label, and store as explained when completely dry.

Stains

In case of the mild stains, rinsing with seltzer can help. Just bloat the stained area with a clean cloth when you’re done.

For more serious stains, you need to put a clean cloth over it to absorb any excess liquid. Take a knife or a spoon and scrape out the stain if possible. After that, you should soak a linen cloth in a mix of white vinegar, wool detergent and cold water in equal parts, and dub the stain with it.

Dubbing inwards

When dubbing, work your way inwards, and on both sides of garment, keeping the spreading of the stain under control. Same thing can be done by applying a small amount of eucalyptus oil.

Then proceed to wash it as explained. If you are hand washing it, you can use a mix of white vinegar and water to rinse out. In the stain persists, consult your dry cleaner, they will probably know how to help you.

General care

Airing your wool garments or blankets is the easiest way to get rid of the odors, and prolong the time between the washes.

Some of the wool garments can be put on hangers, but to avoid sagging, it’s best to lay them on the flat surface, in a ventilated space, at a room temperature.

You can do this outside, of course, just choose a warm, breezy day, and don’t expose the wool to the direct sunlight, because that will make it yellow and look aged.

If you want to refresh your wool garment, just hang it in a steamy bathroom. Moisture will fresh it up and it can even remove wrinkles.

To remove the dust and dirt that stuck to your wool coat during the day, use a soft brush and brush it down lengthwise.

Pilling

Pilling is something you will have to deal with, most definitely. Arm yourself with lint rollers, pill shavers and in extreme cases, scissors and razors (just be very careful using the last two).

To limit pilling to the minimum, wash your wool garments inside out, and try liquid detergents that are made specifically for washing wool or delicate laundry.

Moths

When it comes to moths, prevention is the key. Your wool clothes should only be stored when it’s clean. Use bags filled with dried lavender or cedar wood and place them or hang in your wardrobe.

Not only do they smell great, but they work as a great insect-repellant. You can also use chemical products that work on the same principal.

Speaking of wardrobe and storage, the golden rule for storing wool is ‘fold knits, hang woven’. You should use padded or shaped hangers, stay away from weak, plastic ones. Invest in some zipped bags for the clothes you don’t wear that often.

There’s a reason behind that – if not treated to be color-fast, microfiber tends to bleed color (especially when greens & red are combined with white).

The blankets that don’t bleed in the white-vivid combo are much more expensive but we’ve seen no significant difference in the quality compared to the FunN’Sun.

Microfiber is a combo fabric (between polyester and polyamide) and, over the last decade, we have seen a surge of low quality fabrics onto the market. We’re basing this on other blanket types we’ve tested and reviewed over the years, but the criteria is the same.

The color-fast issue we mentioned above might not be much of an issue for one-season blankets of akin colors but if you want to get a blanket with whites included without breaking the bank.

If the imitation of the product is well-finished you won’t even be able to tell until you try to dry water from your body. If it just pushes the water around, you probably have a polyester fabric on your hand “posing” as microfiber.

If the blanket genuine microfiber, the quality is determined by the denier and % of material. We found the SportLite to be super absorbent and great at heat insulation from the sand.

Giant GO sand-free waterproof beach blanket

GO is a different product compared to blankets we talked about thus far. While parachute fabric and microfiber are designed to be quick-drying, they have no backing or layers that would be waterproof.

The material of the GO is Oxford Polyester (Ripstop), the GO offers more insulation and the moisture of the surface underneath (whether it’s sand, grass or ground) practically has no chance of “breaking through”. On the other hand, the top finish is still quick-drying.

The blanket is kept in place with either sand-pockets (which will be enough for a trip to the beach) or small stainless steel pegs you can use to secure the blanket even better by attaching the corner loops.

Oxford ripstop polyester is a peg stronger than parachute nylon fiber and is likely to last longer. Since it’s a different type of material, you’d see the rating of “water absorbent” change to “waterproof.” The ratings we reached are below.

It retains color very well and doesn’t change, which leaves room for using vivid colors and patterns varying from cute (soft pinks that most women will like) to and expressive for the youngsters. The nature of parachute nylon also allows for small and light packing. More about it here.

Polypropylene

The main PRO of blankets made of polypropylene are the longevity and toughness. The secondary benefit is the stylish look and feel similar to that of a woven beach throw blankets.

Polypropylene is waterproof and the little water absorbed dries quickly. It’s also naturally resistant to temperature changes and makes for a great insulator from the scorching heat of the summer beach sand.

Microfiber

None of the materials we talked about above compares in softness to the cozy feel of micro fibers.

It’s only natural that they make one of the best beach blankets if you think about the absorbing properties of microfiber cloths. The important part here is knowing how to recognize the real thing from cheap imitations. It’s one of the few materials that allows for a circle stitching to hold well and most of the round blankets are made using microfiber.

If you get that part right, you’ll end with soft blanket that will last for summers with minimal changes.

Fleece and polar fleece

Because of the similar properties, fleece often plays the role of wool and offers a great substitute for those who are not fans (or are allergic) of the prickly wool fibers. It’s used for beach throw blankets, especially its sub-type polar fleece.

Polar fleece is a bit more rugged and stronger than regular fleece, hence the more common use for clothes and clothes. The direction of the fibers defines the stretching – it usually stretches more along one of its dimensions (depending on the weave).

Compared to wool, it’s far lighter and easier to wash and clean.

Oxford Ripstop fabric

Oxford ripstop is used for backing of waterproof beach blankets. Not only does it make them waterproof and more durable.

We already talked about the basics of the methodology we use to rate the blankets, but in the section below we’ll dig deeper and explain the nitty-gritty of it all – from the moment we decided to review the products to the moment we first had a list of Top 10 best beach blankets.

One of our editors is a Materials technology engineer and, in guides like this, it’s usually him and a few of his colleagues (that we bring in for the project) who make the initial picks.

What are “initial picks?”

The initial picks are the products that passed the first “filter” and qualified to be looked into closer.

In this case, the broad list included over 120 products (based on user satisfaction data). The shortlist are the blankets we analyze and review in more depth. In this case that list consisted of 20 products.

• We favor no brands and nothing can influence our ratings. To ensure that, we follow a few rules:
• We accepted no “free samples” in the initial phase (and trust us, since we first compiled this guide, we’ve had many offers for that). That might change in the next update since we now have more data available and the rating algo is tweaked t make the testing blind.
• Blind testing means that the ratings are reached by marking the blankets as Sample 1, Sample 2, etc & removing all visible tags. We learned so much about the blankets that this practice doesn’t make much of difference anymore for in-house testing since we know the look and feel of all the blankets we list. However, it does make all the difference if we send the product out to our featured testers. If we don’t share the brand, there’s little to no chance of them looking up the product and basing their reviews and rating on existing data.
• We update this guide on quarterly basis to include new data and accurately reflect the market. In terms of re-testing the products in the field and in-house, our budget allows us one update per year. The exception to that rule are cases of products that see an significant change in user satisfaction %s between the “small” quarterly updates. If we see any red lights here (usually a drop in ratings) we re-test the said product. Reasons for this are usually a change in price that affects the user satisfaction and, more often, a change in manufacturing or outsourcing practices.

For this guide we had no unscheduled testing so far.

Our review and rating algorithm is a “living” thing. That’s especially true for this guide since the products and quality aspects are unique and the methodology we use to rate, say, heated electric blankets, hardly applies.

For this guide, it was back to the drawing board and the changes were more than tweaking since we had to include categories we’ve never used before like the blankets being “sand-free” (you might see this aspect referred to as “sand-repellent”) and waterproof.

Our team of Material Technology Engineers tested, reviewed and put together the initial group of 28 electric blankets – candidates for the “title” of best electric blanket.

The next step was to find the people to actually use these over the last winter. For that, we had the help of 44 “regular people”, most of them active bloggers.

The only instructions we provided were what to keep evidence of, we made no other suggestions.

Since then , we’ve been updating this guide on bi-monthly or quarterly basis.

In this month’s update, we’ve seen only minor revisions, but nothing to write home about or influence the top picks. That goes both for the categories of blankets and throws.

We didn’t feel the methodology we use for other products we review (like mattresses) is going to work for this one. We have only one Materials Technology Engineer in-house (our Editor-in-chief, Bob).

An electric blanket is just like a regular blanket only that this one is fitted with insulated wires to generate heat in blanket and keep the one warm during a cold night. Modern electric blankets consist of rheostats which evenly spreads the generated heat.

It might sound obvious or redundant exlaining it, but we wanted to address the question since we’ve been receiving emails from people about the difference of these and blankets with no external heating system.

There two ways you can use a good and safe heated blanket; you can either heat up the bed for a while before wrapping yourself up or just leave the switch on through the night or an cozy afternoon lounge with your favorite TV show on.

George C. Crowley (1920-2000) was an engineer and inventor who held over 80 patents, including the thermostatically controlled electric blanket.

Ever since their invention, these blankets have proved to be priceless in countries where temperature falls much below 0 degrees in winter and heaters fail to heat house.

After the initial safety concerns were resolved, the electric blanket came out swinging and quickly entered the mainstream of bedding.

Modern electric blankets are made up of nonflammable carbon fiber that safer and durable.

• When looking for the best electric blanket, go for King or Queen size, as they cover the whole bed and have separate controls on both sides.
• Before buying any heated throw or blanket, make sure it’s tested and certified. Most products come with a standardization label; make sure it’s there. If you’re shopping online read the reviews of the electric blanket you have your eye and look for people mentioning the standardization label.
• Go for blankets with washable fabric.
• The light ones consume less energy – bear that in mind if the energy bill is an issue and you plan to use it every day.
• It’s important to check the energy rating of a blanket to ensure that it doesn’t become a burden on your power bill.
• Look for the auto shut off feature – it’s an important safety plus.

To avoid damaging the wiring, wrap the blanket instead of folding it – even better, if you have the space, wrap it around any cylindrical object on hand – like the carton part of a used paper towels.

Electric blankets consist of insulated resistive wires that conduct heat when switched on. These wires pass throughout the blanket in a serpent-like pattern. For dual pads, the wires pass through both halves, each with its own control panel.

Some modern ones use carbon fiber wires as the heating mechanism.

The wires are neither bulky nor conspicuous; which was a common issue with older models.

Carbon fiber wires can be seen in contemporary expensive cars as heating units in seats and armrests. The best electric blankets come with a rheostat to regulate both body and blankets temperature.

Concerning voltage, most electric blanket run on low voltage; about 12-24 volts.

To avoid overheating, most of the better ones have an auto shutoff mechanism bringing them to a halt. Some are actually set to go off after, say, every 50 minutes of being shut off.

Classic electric blankets

These are traditional blankets that offer both comfort and convenience. You can easily pull them off the bed even in the middle of the night when it gets too warm. Since you are wrapped under them, some heat is radiated upwards. This could be considered a shortcoming in terms of energy efficiency.

On the other hand, they get you and your bed warmed up quickly.

Electric mattress pads

These pads usually serve as an alternative to heated electric blankets. They normally cover the mattress, heating just you and the mattress; not the surrounding air as a classic heated blanket or throw would.

Electric mattress pads are considered safer than electric blankets because they don’t bunch up- a condition that leads to heat buildup.

The main issue is getting them off in case you get too hot.

Heated throw blankets

Heated throw blanket also known as electric throw blanket is a smaller version of electric blanket designed for use when you want to wrap yourself up on a chilly day. However, they don’t generate as much heat compared to full-blown electric blankets.

That makes them a no-go for extreme conditions but just right for your average American home.

In general, there are four types of safe and warm electric blanket:

• Underblankets
• Overblankets
• Duvets and throws.

Underblankets lie between you and the mattress, overblankets and duvets go over your body while throws wrap you up while relaxing on the couch or in car seats.

Let’s have a look at some of the most frequently asked questions regarding the safety of electric blankets and electric throw blankets.

Who shouldn’t use warming blankets?

It rarely happends with the high-quality products, but on the lower end of the spectrum things go in the unexpected direction with an electric blanket.

It’s electronic after all; the controls can falter, it could bunch up and overheat, and the wires can come out or break.

It’s best to keep electric blankets away from:

• Kids
• People insensitive to heat or temperature changes
• People who can’t operate the blanket if anything goes wrong, like the disabled or elderly people with significant loss of brain or body functions

Can pregnant women use them?

There’s no consensus on the issue of using an electric blanket when pregnant so we’ll take the safe road here and wiggle our way out of this one with the old “consult your doctor approach.”

Can they be used with an artificial pacemaker?

Some articles from Mayo Clinic, The American Heart Association and other well-known doctors and health institutions state that electric blankets do not damage pacemakers or hamper their functions.

Through our research, we also didn’t come across any complaints by pacemaker users about these blankets.

Why can’t those with diabetes use eletric blankets?

When you look on electric blankets covers or manuals, you can notice the warnings that those with diabetes should not use them.

Patients with diabetes are insensitive to heat and, at times, they can’t feel their legs or arms and risk being burnt. However, if you use these blankets just to warm up the beddings and then switch them off, it’s safe.

Throw away the old ones if you still keep them around

Old, worn-out electric blankets with exposed wires sticking out belong in the dumpster, no two ways about it.

They are a safety risk.

To summarize the safety tips:

• Before using the blanket for the first time, go through the user manual first and learn how it’s used
• Turn off the power supply when blanket is not in use
• Clean the blanket according to the instructions. Some of them are not meant to come in contact with water.
• Every now and then, check the condition of the wires to ensure they are sealed. Any exposed wire needs to be repaired or replaced.
• If you’re sleeping with your pet, stay safe and don’t use it. This increases chances of the wires being scratched.
• Never put papers or books on the blanket while switched on – it’s a fire hazard

Electric throw blankets have come a long way since their humble beginning. While the olden models were problematic to wash, the latest models come in a fabric that is machine washable. Make sure you read the manufacturers instruction on how to clean your blanket.

Questions to ask yourself before choosing a heated blanket/throw:

What’s the best heated blanket for you?

If you’re in the market for a new electric blanket you may want to spend a minute of your time looking at these important points before placing your order.

Which size blanket to go with?

Measure your bed, really. Get a tape measure and physically get the dimensions, all manufacturers have slightly different opinions of what a blankets size actually is (and it may differ from the actual size of your bed).

Your first thought should be what you need the blanket to offer but does the person next to you want the same? Let’s say your cold but your partner isn’t if you put the blanket on that may cause a problem! So look for electric throw blankets that come with dual controls, timers & heat settings these are the most important features a blanket can offer.

This is only a question you can answer but I would suggest you think long term, you may be able to save a few pence by purchasing the blanket really cheap at that discount store but what happens if it goes wrong will they help you sort it out? Spending that little bit more is worth it if you get the follow-up service, you may think you won’t need it but what if you do?

We’d say, “Yes.”

It’s very important. The automatic shutoff will disconnect the heating element when it too hot or after several minutes as programmed. Such blankets may come at a dear price but they are worth it.

Thicker blankets use much power but they don’t overheat easily. The thinner ones are cheaper, use low voltage but have a higher burn risk. So basically, the thicker the blanket, the better the service rendered.

Most of the time, the top heated blankets will feature:

• Control marking – if possible, choose one that allows you to change settings mid-use. Therefore, look for a blanket with an LCD screen or raised marking for easy adjusting in the dark.
• Warm foot zone – if you are the kind of a person whose feet get extremely cold at night, choose an electric throw blanket with a warmer foot section.
• Waterproofing – a waterproof lining will prevent moisture from seeping into the electronic parts.
• Removable control – if you don’t want a blanket that is hand washed, then look for one with removable controls. It will be possible to use the machine washer to clean it.
