With all the shady outsourcing practices and low-quality products flooding the market, the last three years have been especially baffling if you’re an average buyer looking to get a good inflatable bed.

What’s new in the 2025 update

This month’s update brought some slight changes in the rankings, but it’s nothing to write home about – the blow up beds that were top-rated in previous updates continue to dominate in most quality categories.

Other news is that, in the winter months, we shift the ratings a bit to award the ability of the bed to keep the guests warm. Every test we’ve done on that usually involves a nice cozy blanket. In more general terms

For 2025, we made some tweaks to keep this guide as helpful as ever. We updated the ratings to focus more on comfort for guests, storage ease, and how well the beds keep warm in colder months.

We also added feedback from Reddit and other trusted sources to make the picks even more balanced. Plus, new categories like “top picks for seniors” were added based on what readers asked for.

These changes make sure you’re getting the most up-to-date advice for picking the perfect air mattress for your guests.

Special attention to different types of guests

We’ve also made specific adjustments by guest type and looked to people who needed extra weight to be comfortable on their stay with you.

Significantly bigger data pool

We can confidently say that the amount of testing data we’re basing our rankings on is now second to none. We managed to ship out a significant number of products to field testers before the current crisis. The point here is that the ratings are still a “living” thing that changes to keep up with the market.

Most importantly, we took special care to identify any changes in quality of our picks. It’s a good thing when we don’t see disappointments there. It’s typically a sign of healthy market trends – solid new arrivals keeping the industry on their toes.

We don’t like recommending stuff that you can’t find, yet we are not comfortable of getting rid of this entry – let’s wait for a while and se if it comes back.

No airbed manufacturer will ever recommend to use their air mattreses as a permanent bed.

So, neither can I…

This is what I can do – tell you my opinion on which would be the best if you chose to do so.

Anyway…

What’s the best and why

The best air mattress for everyday sleep is Ivation EZ because you get more than the support of air. Out of 14 people we interviewed about this, 11 chose the Ivation or some other EZ. Generally, the problem with sleeping on it everyday arises from the air saging inside.

So, you need an actual frame…it’s prettty much the same thing as a regular mattress…and I don’t recommend only memory foam.

The main benefits for everyday support

Think of the frame as the springs – it gives you that additional support that an huge lump of air just can’t.

There’s also less pressure build-up for the seams and less air leaking. And when it does happen, there’s the adaptive pump that maintains the pressure. It also might be useful insight into why the products we mentioned are a good choice.

Moreover, the automatic setup and packing case make it an excellent option for small homes that can’t spare a dedicated space for a permanent bed.

Tests and results

We tested it – I slept on it everyday for two weeks straight and have seen no issues with my back pain becoming worse. In fact, it might be placebo, but it kind of subsided.

I heard the pump adding air 3 times in two weeks, but I’m a light sleeper. Most people won’t be bothered by this thing. And if you are, remember that it’s teh built-in automatic pump makes it good for everyday sleep.

But, the database of first-hand experiences is just as important as personal testing. Below are ratings based on results from our tests and data from our base of interviews with first hand users.

Made by industry veterans but now discontinued – here’s what to look at instead

This bed is now discontinued and we’re keeping it on the list hoping it will come back However, it does seem that it’s gone for good because we could’t find it anywhere…and we obviously know all the places to look.

There was so much fuss about this bed for the past few years that we actually waited for it to hit the market (a few years back) to be able to test it and include it in this guide. It did take them long to design it and start production, so it is a pity they’re not making it any more. It used to be one of our top picks in two major categories:

The fact that it’s mounted on a steel frame means you’ll be sleeping well away from any pesky buzzard that might otherwise crawl up the sides of a regular bed.

On the other hand, the blow up mattress is not attached to the frame but to the fabric sleeve.

Being the official air bed of the National Park Fooundation among 100s of inflatables is no small thing. The Coleman SupportRest is an industry classic and has been of of the best outdoors air mattresses for years.

It deserved the title by being better in pretty much every aspect that matters, from air retention and support to a stable and firm sleeping surface.

Camping Series – best outdoor air mattress among low-rises

Compared to the Coleman models above, this is a “young” product.

It hit the market in the spring of 2015 but it wasn’t long before it became toprated in user reviews and had the highest % of user satisfaction.

Best air mattress for kids and toddlers is one of the categories we had to get help for. We found it in the awesome community of Mom bloggers.

We sent out 12 airbeds for kids to 12 and moms and asked for their impressions.

The results are clear – by far the best blow up mattresss in the category is the Shrunks Tuckaire, with the Intex Kidz being the runner-up.

If you already have a size in mind, the process of choosing is simplified by a factor of 10.

Bamboo Best Choice review

The dimensions of both models are 73 x 29 x 7.5 inches.

The difference between the two single models is that one comes with a battery-operated pump (4D cell), and the other comes without a pump

However, any standard hand or leg pump will work for both.

According to reviews of our testers, the best twin air mattress is the Dream Series by SoundAsleep. Rated at 92.2/100, our pick in Twin size is the product that’s been by fast the most popular over the last few years.

The difference between the Dream Series and Cloud Nine and (both coming from SoundAsleep) comes down to the pump and price.

The Cloud Nine includes a Dual Smart Pump, while the Dream Series comes with a regular built-in pump.

Oh, and yes, The Cloud Nine cost much more – almost 70% more to be precise.

This inflatable mattress is currently highest -rated overall and it’s, naturally, our pick in Queen size.

Current gap between the Cloud Nine and the runner up is a hefty 0.4 and, looking at the reviews and test results, we don’t see that gap closing any time soon.

As you can see, not much has changed in the ratings in this month’s update. The only new arrival to the list comes from Aerobed.

That speaks towards the reliability of our rating systems.

The runner up air mattress on Wirecutter is the interesting part – they went with a good ol’ Coleman. We’ll have to dig deeper into that in the next update.

Furthermore, it’s often the people who had bad experiences withother models reach out to the Reddit air mattress community….if such a thing exists…you know, the people on the site that have experinbce with airbeds.

About our reviews

What we tried to do in this guide is make a most well-rounded list of best air mattresses out there, both for home use and outdoors.

We stay on top of things by updating the reviews with new impressions and rating once a month.

We’re also adding a guest-focused metrics all the time and body of data grows. A few examples of metrics like that are:

• guest satisfation when used for the weekend,

When we analyze products like this, we typically have more data to go on.

Since most blankets come with their own removable cover, they’re not as many separate products, and not all of them come in all sizes.

So we made an extra effort to diversify our recommendations with the sizing in mind.

For the sake of practicality (for those of you looking for a quick answer), we’ll list the product that we chose to be in our TOP 6 and explain shortly how and why these found their way to the top

Why it matters

For us, this meant sifting through the data looking for the experiences pertaining solely to the cover.

In the case of this Home Smart, the product is listed as a standalone with most retailers, which means you can be sure that the owner satisfaction you’re seeing reflects the quality of the product.

One-stop-shop

What we mean by one-stop-shop is the fact that most of the covers we’ll look at have a unique texture. It’s either smooth two-sided polyester or padded or regular cotton, stitched velvet and tencel, with or without tactile bumps.

The Home Smart justified the name by offering an option for each of these types, meaning that whatever the kind of cover you’re looking for you are likely to find it among the Home Smart options.

Finally, the warranty policy is as clear as it gets and we have seen none of the “red lights” that can turn us away from a product.

If the warranty terms are unclear (read: there’s room for interpretation) or we see owners complaining about the customer service falling short, it’s a huge minus and possibly a deal-breaker.

We saw none of that with Home Smart. The wording is clear – they offer a 100% money back guarantee and a lifetime warranty. Through the years, we’ve analyzed 1000s of products in the industry, and this is as good as it gets.

If you already own a blanket, the option of getting the Home Smart in two materials (let’s say the bamboo for the summer and the padded velvet for the winter) seems like a get-and-forget option.

Hug Bud – 48 x 72” / Twin

Because of the extra padding, it can be used on its own. It is, however, specifically designed for the Hug Bud, which means that the ties that are supposed to secure it are distributed along the edges with the Hug Bud in mind.

There are 8 of these.

As we go along, you’ll notice a pattern – most of the blankets have the same number of ties and, again, most of them are on the corners and one in the middle of each side.

What this means for you is that if you get the sizing right, which is pretty straightforward, the cover can be easily attached and that’s a big plus.

In this aspect, no material does a better job than bamboo.

In this category, we like two products. When we say like, we mean that the numbers are there for us to stand behind these two.

Sizes

We’ve chosen two because of sizing issues. Our first pick, the DensityComfort only comes in two sizes: 48×72 “ and 60×80 ”.

The other comes from YNM and is available in 4 sizes: 36×48”, 41×60”, 48×72”, 60×80” (queen) and even the scarce 80×87”.

Don’te be confused by the terms

We’ve already gone over the fact that terms like queen or king size here are not universally applicable.

Among “regular blankets” and throws, say, king size would mean that it’s 108×90”. When that terminology is used here, it described what bed size the product is meant for.

To put it simply, you’re better of by looking at the precise dimensions than the descriptive terms.

So, let us get back to the two products we mentioned.

We tried to separate the wheat from the chaff here by only looking at the products that would be suitable for hot sleepers, and these two stood out, primarily in terms of how satisfied the owners are.

We dug deeper and found that these two have a lower 5 of customer reporting problems like durability issues, shrinking, not being true to size of being damaged on arrival.

The main difference between the two is that YnM has more of silky quality to it.

In the following section, we’ll hopefully satisfy the more cautious – people who want to know more about how we choose the products on the list above and what should you look for if you don’t like any of these.

Sizing is paramount

One question that we kept seeing is:

Can I use my regular duvet cover?

The answer to that is yes. However, because of the extra weight, you might find it moving around or the weight shifting, which defeats the purpose. It’s smarter to get one that’s designed for this purpose alone and enjoy all the benefits.

Now, what do we mean by “designed”?

First of all, your regular cover is likely to be bigger than the blanket, and you’ll find yourself in a constant battle with extra material flapping around.

Even if you happen to hit the nail on the head with the size, there will be less movement, but it will move.

The reasons are the ties/snaps

Let’s get straight to the point – the optimal scenario is getting a cover that attaches at all the right places.

That probably sounds more difficult than it is.

The reason is the fact that (again, in most cases) the cover is attached to the inners using ties. In most sizes, there will be 8 of them, one on each corner and one in the middle of each side.

The two rules of thumb would be:

• Make sure that the sizing is correct
• Make sure that the same method of attaching is utilized both in the blanket and the cover

Alternative attachment methods

We are mentioning “method” because there are blankets out there that feature snaps or buttons and are meant to be used with a cover from the same company.

You can poke holes in the removable cover and do some sewing to make it all work, but why would you do that if you’re already spending money.

If you’re anything like us, you’ll like the product that you get to be what we call “get-and-forget.”

If you get the sizing right – the rest is mostly a matter of preference, provided of course that you don’t get a sub-par product.

Most common materials

Tencel, velvet, regular cotton, bamboo…there is a range of materials available and even the sythetic ones are often so soft that you can’t tell the difference. So, if you’re strict about what comes in contact with your skin, pay close attention to the label (of the fact sheet if you’re shopping online).

Our picks are made with most common sizes in mind, which are: 60×80, 48×72 and 54×72 (in inches).

With the less popular sizes like 50×75, 48×78, 80×87, 41×60, 40×60 & 70×50, we tried to do the best we can to offer at least one product. It’s fair to mention that sizing versatility is one big plus for the YnM.

Why shopping online for a cover has its advantages

In a store like, say, Target, you can touch the product and see if you like how it feels against your skin, but there’s no way to know if the ties tend to fall off, how good is the stitching and how well it stands the test of time without changing.

The last one is crucial (at least it proved to be in our analysis), especially size-wise. You’ll want a cover that’s easy to maintain (machine wash and dry) and doesn’t shrink or bleed color.

Who should choose a pad?

If you just want to add a bit of extra comfort and loft to your mattress, a pad might be enough.

A pad will also be a better choice if you just want to protect your mattress or cover existing stains.

It doesn’t have the support of a topper, so it’s not going to change your sleep as much as a thick topper.

It’s not right for you if:

You are looking to address a specific issue like back pain or if you’re on the heavier side (over 220 lbs)…because this topper is about comfort rather than support.

On the other hand, Latex is a natural material known for being healthy, supportive and durable but not as comfortable as memory foam.

Memory foam vs. latex toppers

An obvious choice

With memory foam outperforming Latex as seen in the chart above it will be the preffered choice for most people.

But the inherent risk and thoughts that linger in your mind about your mattress releasing chemicals into the air around you is not comething you should be taking to bed with you.

With all that said, going with a memory foam topper that’s been extensively tested for any harmful chemicals, a topper made of CentriPUR-US approved memory foam is the obvious choice.

If you want the best of both worlds, the support that’s close to that of latex without sacrificing teh conmfort and all the spine benefits that come with better pressure points relief, you’ll want to go with a thicker, CentriPUR-US certifid memory foam topper.

Types of latex toppers

Three types of latex used to make toppers and pads are:

• Natural (the preffered choice)
• Blended
• Synthetic Latex

Why is Natural Latex the best choice?

Getting a topper made of synthetic latex beats the purpose of choosing letx in the first place.

Choosing latex should be about health and being risk-free and going with a pad or topper with added chemicals is like eating brocolli because it’s healthy but adding melted cheese on top.

If you ask us, it doesn’t make sense.

Buyer beware – read the fine print

When looking through the specs make sure that the topper is 100% end-to-end natural latex.

What some companies do is advertise their products as “natural” but only include a thin layer of latex on top, whiule the rest of the topped is blended with syntetics.

The PURE GREEN 4-inch is one of the 3 best mattress toppers overall and certainly the top pick in the category of all-natural latex.

This product is natural latex top to bottom…no advertising tricks, no confusing language.

It’s one of the few reasonably priced products in the category but it does cost about 70-80% more than the memory foam competition of the same thickness and size.

There is a lot of misinformation going around about Talalay and Dunlop latex and we believe that the confusion is created purposefully.

Why?

Because if the companies can convince you that somehow Talalay is the better option, they will sell you the type of topper that’s cheaper to make, does contain chemicals and is far from “all-natural”.

Talalay is not “better”

If you are looking into latex toppers you’re probably about safety and eco-friendliness.

The hush-hush of the latex industry

We apologize if we are bursting any bubbbles, but Talalay latex toppers contain 50% + of synthetic ingredients.

That’s why you’ll never see a Talalay topper with that’s GOLS certified (Global Organic Latex Standard)

We put the word better in quotes because a Talalay topper does last longer and is more lofty than Dunlop, but is never all-natural.

The best of them (including our pick presented below) are made with a high percentage of the finest down feathers.

Advantages of down feather toppers:

• Down topper is the most comfortable type we’re looking into in this guide
• Down feather has a soft luxurious feel to it
• The top choice if you are looking for a warm topper for winters
• They usually come with an extended warranty on all defects
• Down feather toppers are cheaper

CONs of feather toppers:

• Too hot for warm rooms without climate control – if this is your case, move on and take a look at our top picks among memory foam cooling pads
• Maintenance – down feather toppers can’t be washed or even steam-cleaned, they would never feel the same, so if you god with feather, change your bedding once a week.
• Lower quality down pads change shape over time and form lumps as the feather moves between chambers – that’s why it’s important to choose one with solid, end-to-end stitching

If you want comfort that’s very similar to down feather and looking for a more affordable alternative, it comes in the form of hypoallergenic synthetic fibers. Fibre mattress toppers feel very close to down at the fraction of the cost.

Fibre is commonly used in hotels because it’s  easy to maintain and can be washed without compromising the padding

The very word “hollow-fibre” tells a story.

The fiber of these toppers is not as fine as that of microfiber and has more space in the knotting. This space makes it more breathable but also gives it a more bouncy, synthetic feel.

Who will choose a microfibre topper?

If the choice is just between the fibre options then the answer is “most people”.

Why?

Because it fills a very specific market gap – that of people who are looking for comfort similar to down and feather but don’t want to spend as much.
